about

Emu Creek is a real or mythical place...like the Aussie quarter acre house block. Where we all want to go...a place of peace and tranqillity. I went to the pub at Yangan...the publican said "Emu Creek...it's God's country". I tried to go up there many times, and failed...nowadays I go there in my mind. This track is a tune I originally wrote on banjo...hence the very diatonic sound. It was in G of course, now its in E flat, which is my new G on baritone guitar. It is sweet, and this recording is on my Larrivee, recorded on a Zoom H2 at The Pocket Studio (listen out for real bird calls at the end, its not a tight studio) and mastered on MasterMix in Traction.

Emu Creek © 2017 Roo Friend APRA
Afternoon sun streaming in my window I’m
Driving fast on the Settler’s Highway
Heading north through those breezy cornfields
And I gaze in wonder

Mountains like open arms with a valley in between
It’s been calling for years “Please explore me!”
Somewhere up that track Emu Creek is waiting
And as I drive I wonder

Shall I go there now, while it’s on my mind?
Should I wait until I’ve got more time to plan things?
Will I die before I drive up that dusty back road?
All these things I wonder

I remember that publican who said God’s country
Was up at Emu Creek and that it made me wonder
Was I missing something, were his words a sign?
And for years I’ve had that wonder

A gentle slope below the east-west ridge is my fancy
facing north just above the creek and very private
a homemade shack amongst a garden will be my island
and there I will just wonder

Now I’m at Emu Vale and I see the signpost
It’s a right hand turn but I drive on by scattering stones
Gotta be home by seven maybe another time
But will I? I wonder

Plans of grandiose nothings have always kept it waiting
That story is my life: endless procrastinating
When I’m old and grey and my dreams have blown away
Regret will be my wonder

I had a dream last night Emu Creek was mine
The sun was golden honey I was in love divine
Music was in my heart I woke in the dark
Crying tears of wonder

So I say if you’re beaten and your eyes are greetin’
And your grip on life is starting to surely weaken
find a place to go where you can breathe in pure air
and simply sit and wonder

When your soul’s free and you want the peace
Step outside your life go to Emu Creek
Right at Emu Vale don’t pass that turn by
Go on up and wonder
