A Thousand People A Week I saw it on the news heard it on the radio So what are we gonna do and where are they all gonna go? 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? They gonna eat all our food drink all our Queensland booze I say build a fence, no, better a wall from Rathdowney to Cavill Avenue Mall 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? They gonna drink all our water, there’s not enough for everyone They gonna marry all our daughters even worse soak up all our Queensland sun 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? They come from strange places They got strange religions oh Some even believe in God got a fish sticker on the Winnebago 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? People in cars People off planes People on the bus People on the train People on foot and in boats and canoes People on every kinda transport they choose 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? It used to be a big country town Now it’s getting bigger and how 140 people a day is 6 people every hour 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? I love this city I love this city It’s relaxed and pretty Not dirty and gritty 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? It’s gonna be like California California in the 30’s Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you It’s gonna get down and dirty 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? 1000 people a week,1000 people a week, 1000 people a week,1000 people a week 1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do? copyright Roo Friend APRA 2017

The Second Coalition Budget Blues Times are hard, they’re rough Some people are getting too much I’m not getting enough I’ve got the no cash no stash hard up Second Coalition Budget blues. There’s a wolf at my door I keep on feeding the beast It keeps on wanting more I’ve the canine, sit down, roll over Second Coalition Budget blues. I’ve got the budget balancing blues I’m cutting back to basics: cigarettes and booze I’ve got the hung over, draw back, spun out Second Coalition Budget blues. Now if you and I were born in Dubai we might get a big fat oil royalty Cos over there the queen and king would do the right thing They’d share it all with you and me But here in the land of milk and honey we’re so uptight about money The government and the companies steal Steal from the blacks steal from the whites Steal from every blinky blanky colour they see So dig me a hole in the sand Where I can put my head so I don’t hafta understand About the corporate protestant psychopathic Second Coalition Budget In the morning when I hand in my form the man And he stamps it with a big fat grin He knows that I’ve spent it before I even get it He sez “I don’t why ya even bother handing it in” When you could laze on sunny days On a QLD beach, with a mango in reach With the slip on, slop on, slap on Second Coalition Budget blues. Eating your lunch right off the trees Where ya don’t need a shirt Not a chance that you’ll freeze In the skin tight, hot nights, alright, Second Coalition Budget blues. Yes you could dig a hole and put in a seed And in time you could have everything that ya need In the home grown, no dig, fresh picked Second Coalition Budget blues. So get the the home made, fresh laid, unpaid Second Coalition Budget blues. copyright 2017 Roo Friend APRA

The Hanoi Street Waltz © 2016 Roo Friend APRA Motorbikes come from all directions cars and buses and bicycles too When you cross the street trust in your feet cos thinking could well be the end of you Just walk straight out into the traffic don’t hesitate dodge or be scared Don’t let courage fail ya It’s not like Australia No-one’s self-righteous and there’s no road rage Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz When I was a boy in Australia I learnt “look right, look left, look right again… walk cross if its safe use your eyes and your ears”, try that in Hanoi you’ll be waiting for years Farewell to that sidewalk forever, farewell to any fear of the road My crossing was safe, regulated by State, the green man the Glorious Leader I know But Vietnamese anarchy reigns on these roads, there is no translation to their highway code It’s sweet and it’s happy, individual as hell Proof that the communist system is well Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz I used to be a brain dead pedestrian but a week in Hanoi woke me up from that dream Now crossing the street is a challenge for feet and a rush to my brain of sweet adrenaline That honking cacophony is music to me a soundtrack to a vehicular ballet Motorbikes people and cars all plie while they’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz

Baby’s Got The Blues © Roo Friend APRA 2017 I was born the other day, came into this noisy world Daddy said it’s a boy, when I sure as hell ain’t no little girl Then they took me from my mama Wrapped me so tight I couldn’t move No wonder I get so angry I’m a baby with the blues I’m a baby with the blues Baby baby baby I’m a baby with the blues This little piggy went to market…leave my toes alone! If I hear that rhyme just one more time, I’m gonna crawl away from home Leave me in a dirty nappy! And how about a pair of shoes? No wonder I get so angry I’m a baby with the blues Chorus Daddy said we had to go to the doctor to get a prescription filled Got stuck with a dirty great needle it’s lucky I wasn’t killed But I got my own back later on Kept ‘em both up half the night They were so ratty in the morning They had a terrible fight but I don’t care… I’m a baby with the blues Chorus Now every baby’s different No one is like another When I was born I was so ugly The doctor slapped my mother! So here’s a little question I’m a askin you If you ever were a baby Did you ever get the blues?

300 Metres Of Perennial Rye © Roo Friend APRA 2017 300 meters of perennial rye Six kilos of seed is all that I need Don’t know if it’ll feed me but I gotta try 300 meters of perennial rye I’ve done some hard things might do them again Made a lotta mistakes felt lotsa pain Trouble with women money and friends This job reminds me of that all again I had a family a woman and kids And I am ashamed of the things that I did After the settlement I purchased this land Put up a cabin now that’s where I am I asked the salesman “will a get a crop out of this grain?” He said “five years of head, yes, if you get five years of rain” Five years of pleasure or five years of pain Don’t know if I want to Go through that again Now I’m walking in mud walking in rain It’s the right time to seed this particular plain Ain’t got a harrow, just a rake in my hand, one day I might get a feed off this land My body is aching, and my head is numb this is the hardest work I have done When I get through this gonna lay down and die 300 metres of perennial rye I’m praying for sunshine I’m praying for rain Don’t know what I want but I’m praying again Stuck up in this cabin slowly going mad this could be the last chance I ever have 300 meters of perennial rye six kilos of seed is all that I need Don’t know if it’ll feed me but I gotta try 300 meters of perennial rye

about

This is the result of about 5 years of refining and looking for my style and voice...after a career of 28 years as a pro "gun-for hire" guitarist. It takes time to know what to leave out, to learn what you can and can't do, and how to connect that with people you want to actually be with in a venue ...who might like it, what reaction you want. What you want to say lyrically. And can you live with it long-term? This is the best I could come up with, using the best instruments, great musicians who are also friends, good gear, great mixing, mastering and artwork. Thank you everyone who had input into this project...I'm excited!
